What would you do if you had not just one day but an entire week or more off work for much-needed R&R? If you’ve been saving for a trip, you could visit a destination in the U.S. or go big and travel abroad to a bucket-list foreign city. Read on for some ideas from The Escape Rat.
Munroe Falls, Ohio
Sometimes all you need is a change of pace, so you can practice self-care and press the ‘reset’ button. You can be as active or sloth-like as you please. Go cross-country skiing or sledding near the Metro Park lake, hiking in Tallmadge Meadows, or float down the Cuyahoga River on a raft. Take it easy, pack a picnic basket and a book, and head for your favorite green space to restore your spirit. Munroe is a small town with a big heart, offering multiple ways to chill out locally.
Phuket, Thailand
There’s a reason Thailand is one of the most visited countries in the world. The people are friendly and welcome tourists with open arms, tropical islands such as Phuket are postcard-perfect, and there are frequent cultural festivals to enrich your experience. Massages are super-affordable if you’re keen on spa days, Thai food is marvelous, and opportunities for retail therapy abound. If you don’t like crowds, visit during the shoulder season, or book a hotel with a private beach where you can calmly sip from coconuts to your heart’s content.
Tulum, Mexico
Tulum is wellness central, and you won’t have to fly halfway across the planet to reap its benefits. Think yoga retreats, refreshing dips in cenotes, and Caribbean cacao ceremonies. This slice of the Yucatán peninsula is gorgeous and home to many eco-friendly resorts. And if you’re a history buff, you’ll enjoy visiting the Tulum ruins on the coast.
Vancouver, Canada
Vancouver might be on the same continent as Ohio, but it 100% counts as an international destination and could be just what you need to unwind. For starters, you won’t have to worry about language barriers. You can head off on an Alaskan cruise to check out glaciers, go on a short excursion to spot whales, or take in the fantastic views at Grouse Mountain.
Prepare for Your Break
To ensure your vacation goes smoothly from start to finish, create an out-of-office email message. Also, let your regular work contacts or clients know you’ll be MIA between specific dates. Do a little extra work before you depart, so you’re not thrust into stressful situations when you return.
Consider Buying a Holiday Home
If you wish to come back to a favorite place such as Tulum over and over again, look into purchasing property there. You’ll need savings for at least a 20% down payment if you don’t want to take on too much debt. But with a bit of research, you can find home equity loans with manageable interest rates.
Enjoy Your Time!
Visit one of these locations for an amazing self-care vacation. Prepare for your absences at work, and you’ll be ready to unplug, no matter your destination or you invest in that holiday home!
